When will the challenge take place?

The challenge begins October 21st, 2024 (Waste Reduction Week) and runs until May 9th, 2025.

Who can participate?

The Ontario Schools Battery Recycling Challenge is a competition open to the first 200 elementary and secondary schools in the Province of Ontario that register to participate.

How to Win

Schools that sign up for the challenge will be provided with everything they need to collect and recycle household batteries accumulated at the school and at home. Schools will have the option of choosing between two Starter Kits.

Drum Starter Kit will include:

  • 1 x 45 Gallon Drum
  • 1 x 5 Gallon Bucket
  • Posters
  • Instruction sheet

Pail Starter Kit will include:

  • 3 x 5 Gallon Buckets marked to hold 23 kilograms
  • Posters
  • Instruction sheet

*Additional posters can be downloaded from the Resources page

Teachers, staff and most importantly the students can bring in their batteries from home to recycle them responsibly. Every time your school recycles a full 5-gallon pail, simply ring the bell to update your score!

Cash Prizes

An incentive of .55 cents per kilogram from all the alkaline batteries collected from the Challenge will award the top schools in the Province with a share of the provincial prize pool based on the percentages outlined below.

  • Split equally among all schools that meet the OSBRC Pledge - 30%
  • The school that recycles the most batteries - 30%
  • The school that recycles the second most batteries - 20%
  • The school that recycles the third most batteries - 10%
  • SickKids Foundation Dontation - 10%

Same as last year, we will guarantee a minimum prize pool of $2000 to get things going. But remember, there’s no limit to what it can be, so start recycling today!
